Booster Compliance

November 11, 2009

Dear MSU Blue Line Club member:

Michigan State University strives to have a competitive athletics program with the highest integrity. In meeting this goal, we need the help of all the alumni and friends of our athletics programs. It is our responsibility as an institution to adhere to NCAA rules and this responsibility extends to individuals and organizations who promote Spartan athletics.

As a member of a MSU booster organization, NCAA rules define you as a “representative of athletics interests,” which makes your actions subject to NCAA regulations. Specifically, NCAA bylaws prohibit boosters from making in-person recruiting contacts (on- or off-campus), as well as written or telephone communications with prospective student-athletes or their relatives. Furthermore, NCAA bylaws prohibit boosters from providing transportation, entertainment, meals or anything else of material value to prospective and current student-athletes or their relatives.

These rules and additional information are further outlined in the brochure "Booster Compliance 101" (click here). This informational guide was produced by the Office of Compliance Services as an educational resource to provide a basic overview of NCAA rules and regulations for all alumni and friends of Michigan State University's athletics programs.

Please keep in mind that when a violation occurs, regardless of intention, it can jeopardize the eligibility of our prospective and current student-athletes and result in the MSU athletics program being penalized by the NCAA.

This letter and the informational guide cannot tell you how to handle all situations that may arise, so do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions. Thank you for your continued support of Michigan State athletics.
